Irrigation Agency Integrates Environmental Monitoring Resources to Maintain Irrigation Water Quality

Date :2024-11-11 Issued by Irrigation Management Division

Since its establishment on October 1, 2020, the Irrigation Agency under the Ministry of Agriculture has maintained cross-domain collaboration with the Department of Monitoring and Information under the Ministry of Environment. As of 2024, they have jointly installed approximately 91 smart water quality sensors, expanding the irrigation water quality monitoring area to 2,598 hectares. This year, the Irrigation Agency and the Department of Monitoring and Information completed site selection discussions and field surveys, jointly confirming deployment locations for the smart water quality sensors. Through real-time monitoring capabilities, they track trends in irrigation water quality and detect potential pollution discharge early, deterring illegal activities and maintaining water quality.

The Irrigation Agency stated that it continues to operate an inter-ministerial coordination platform for irrigation water quality protection to integrate environmental monitoring resources. This platform brings together relevant agencies to discuss water quality improvement measures collaboratively. For example, the platform addressed water quality issues caused by road drainage ditches along the No. 2 Lateral Canal of the Taoyuan Canal and the sub-lateral canal of Miaoli Fanzai No. 1 Canal. The discussions prompted local governments, district offices, and relevant management offices of the Irrigation Agency to clarify drainage responsibilities and implement improvements. Enhanced communication and coordination with local governments led to the completion of road drainage improvement work on Luzhu Road in May this year, separating road drainage from the sub-lateral canal of Fanzai No. 1 Canal to protect downstream irrigation water quality. In addition, in September, the new connection project for the Zhongxing Road storm sewer system was completed, effectively preventing road drainage from entering the farmland irrigation and drainage system, thus improving irrigation water quality safety along the No. 2 Lateral Canal of the Taoyuan Canal.

The Irrigation Agency explained that it will continue to deepen inter-agency cooperation to achieve administrative integration. Through the application of smart water quality sensors and collaboration with local environmental protection units, the agency aims to further enhance the effectiveness of environmental monitoring resources. These efforts will effectively deter unscrupulous activities that harm the agricultural production environment and ensure irrigation water quality, thereby safeguarding the safety of agricultural products for consumers and contributing to a sustainable homeland.
