In early September, Typhoon Hinnamnor damaged some of the irrigation canals under the jurisdiction of Hsinchu Administrative Office. The most serious was a 95 meter stretch of the “Zili Canal” main line which was damaged by surging river water in Zhubei, impacting agricultural irrigation over an area of more than 130 hectares. After the office’s director Lin received a report he immediately surveyed the area and ordered that repairs be made as quickly as possible to ensure sufficient water supply to meet agricultural needs. Following a survey of the area by Director Lin and related units it was observed that the part of “Zili Canal” close to Touqian River is often subject to erosion of its concave bank from surging river water and as a result is gradually being hollowed out. As such, in order to ensure stable supply of water the canal should, based on the local terrain, be relocated further away from the riverbank, with an engineering unit asked to coordinate by obtaining related land for the implementation of such a plan, so farmers in the irrigation area can have regular water supply.
